Irregular material becomes design information
Recovered timber rarely arrives as a perfectly standardised product. Machine vision, scanning and structured material passports can describe geometry, defects, previous use and confidence. Parametric design can then respond to the stock that actually exists instead of forcing every resource into a predefined catalogue.

Automation does not remove responsibility
Classification, cutting and robotic handling must operate within defined risk categories. Low-confidence cases need a reject option and human review. For structural, fire-critical or moisture-sensitive use, the professional chain of responsibility remains essential even when machines produce measurements or recommendations.

Design the second and third lifecycle
A material passport can document what a component contains, but documentation alone does not make it reusable. Connections must be accessible and reversible. Assembly sequences, lifting logic and inspection evidence should be preserved so that a future team can safely dismantle and reconfigure the system.
